What is GEO?

An introduction to Generative Engine Optimization.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of improving how a brand is represented in AI-generated answers. It is distinct from Search Engine Optimization, which focuses on ranking in blue-link search results.

Why AI search is different

Search engines return links. AI engines generate answers. When a user asks ChatGPT "What is the best tool for X?", the model synthesizes a response from its training data and real-time web retrieval. It cites the sources it used — not the websites that ranked highest on Google.

To appear in AI answers, your brand needs to be mentioned on the sources AI models trust. This is the core mechanic of GEO.

The citation model

AI models cite sources, not websites. When your brand appears in an AI response, it is because:

  1. A trusted source (Tier A/B/C domain) mentioned your brand
  2. Your own content was retrieved and cited directly
  3. Your brand has enough training data presence to be included without retrieval

GEO focuses on mechanism 1 and 2 — building citation presence on the domains AI models trust.

The 2025–2027 opportunity

AI search is growing faster than traditional search in several categories. Brands that establish AI visibility now face lower competition than they will in 18 months. Genlytic's data shows that the brands tracking and optimizing for GEO today have 3–5x higher Tier 1 mention rates than those who start later.

How Genlytic fits in

Genlytic is the measurement and execution layer for GEO. It tracks which AI engines mention your brand, at what tier, with what sentiment, and in response to which prompts. It generates specific actions to improve each dimension and — via the GEO Agent — executes those actions autonomously.
